SU Business Unit Helps to Secure World Bid March 2003
ConsultUS, a business unit of Stellenbosch University, will be co-responsible for the management of an important
academic meeting in 2009 for which Cape Town has beaten the cities of Fukuota, Japan, and Seoul in Korea.
The 29th International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) in March 2009, a tri-annual international event, is expected
to attract in the region of 2 500 plus delegates. Four languages will be spoken at the conference to encourage the greatest
participation of people from the world over.
Dirk Elzinga, managing director of the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), says "the impact of over 2 500
international business delegates travelling to Cape Town for this conference is huge."
The bid to host the conference was compiled by The South African Society of Occupational Medicine (SASOM), the CTICC, the
Cape Town Convention Bureau and ConsultUS, who will all be responsible for the management of the ICOH 2009
conference.
The Association of Societies for Occupational Safety and Health (ASOSH), South African Society of Occupational Health Nursing
Practitioners (SASOHN), Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH), Mine Medical and Other Health
Professionals' Association (MMOA) and the South African Society of Travel Medicine (SASTM) supported SASOM in this effort.
"This is a wonderful achievement! The ICOH conference is held every three years and has never before been hosted in Sub-Saharan
Africa. The 27th conference was held in Brazil last month where members of ICOH from 33 countries voted Cape Town as their venue
of choice to host the 29th ICOH Conference in 2009," says Elzinga.
"It is a large and prestigious international conference," he says. "The impact of so many international business travellers
eating, drinking and travelling in and around Cape Town cannot be underestimated. I’m confident that international delegates
will spend at least R2 000 a day while attending a conference of this nature, which means that Cape Town and the region could
benefit by up to R30-million for this single conference."
Commenting on the aim of the conference, Professor Daan Kocks of the Medical University of Southern Africa (Medunsa) and
chairperson of the South African Society of Occupational Medicine (SASOM) confirmed that the aim of the conference is to share
knowledge and information that affect workers health worldwide, especially Africa, and the prevention. "This is the leading
global forum for the exchange of information and research development in the field of occupational health, and has the
potential to pave the way for future initiatives impacting on workers health in Sub-Saharan Africa," he said.
